LLM seeding is the practice of deliberately getting information about your brand into the places large language models learn from — so that when a model answers a relevant question, it already "knows" about you and is more likely to mention or recommend you.
Large language models draw on two kinds of knowledge: what they absorbed during training (a broad snapshot of the public web and other text) and what they retrieve live at answer time (current pages fetched via connected search). LLM seeding aims at both — making sure your brand, products, and differentiators are described accurately and repeatedly across the sources models are likely to read.
What LLM seeding looks like in practice
Seeding is less about a single page and more about presence across a credible footprint:
- Authoritative mentions on sites, directories, and communities that models tend to trust and cite.
- Consistent, factual descriptions of what you sell and who it's for, so the model forms an accurate picture rather than a fuzzy one.
- Structured, machine-readable data (clear specs, FAQs, comparison content) that's easy for a model to parse and reuse.
- Third-party corroboration — reviews, roundups, and references — since models weight information that appears in multiple independent places.
Done well, seeding is ordinary good marketing and PR pointed at a new audience: the models. Done badly — spammy, fabricated, or manipulative — it risks the same backlash as any low-quality SEO tactic, and models increasingly discount obviously manufactured signals.
How seeding relates to measurement
Seeding is an input; you still need to measure the output. The only way to know whether your efforts moved anything is to track whether models actually mention you — before and after — across the prompts your customers ask. Without that feedback loop, seeding is guesswork.
