Generative engine optimization

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing your brand and content so that generative AI engines — like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews — mention, cite, and recommend you in their generated answers.

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing your brand and content so generative AI engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, Gemini — mention, cite, and recommend you when they answer questions. Where SEO aims to rank a page in a list of links, GEO aims to get your brand into the answer the model writes.

GEO vs. SEO vs. AEO

These acronyms overlap, and vendors use them loosely, but the distinctions are useful:

  • SEO optimizes for position in a ranked list of links on a search results page.
  • GEO optimizes for presence inside a generated AI response, where there is no fixed list — the model composes a fresh answer each time.
  • AEO (answer engine optimization) is the broader umbrella covering all answer surfaces, including featured snippets and voice; GEO is usually treated as its generative-AI subset.

In everyday use, "GEO" and "AEO" are often interchangeable. What matters is the shift they describe: from ranking pages to earning mentions.

How generative engine optimization works

GEO combines familiar and new tactics:

  • Clear, structured, factual content the model can parse and reuse — direct answers, FAQs, comparison tables, specifications.
  • Credible presence across trusted sources so the model encounters consistent information about you (closely related to LLM seeding).
  • Machine-accessible pages that AI crawlers can actually fetch and read.
  • Measurement of whether any of it works — tracking mentions and AI share of voice across the prompts your buyers ask.

Because engines use query fanout to expand a prompt into many sub-queries, effective GEO means being present across a cluster of related questions, not just one head term.

Why measurement comes first

You can't optimize what you can't see. Before investing in GEO tactics, most teams need a baseline: for which prompts does the model already mention you, where are you invisible, and who's winning instead? That measurement is the foundation the rest of a GEO program is built on.

GEO is measured with AI share of voice, often powered by LLM seeding, and shaped by query fanout. For tooling, compare the best AI visibility tools and best AEO software.
