Agentic commerce

Agentic commerce is commerce in which AI agents act on a shopper's behalf — discovering, comparing, and sometimes completing purchases — rather than the person browsing and buying directly.

Agentic commerce is commerce mediated by AI agents. Instead of a shopper browsing a store and clicking "buy," an AI assistant does some or all of the work on their behalf: it interprets what the person wants, discovers candidate products, compares them, and in some flows completes the purchase directly.

When someone asks ChatGPT "find me a durable carry-on under $200 with a good warranty," and the assistant returns specific products — or, increasingly, can help buy one — that's agentic commerce in action. The buyer never visited a category page or ran a search on a retailer's site. The agent stood between them and the store.

Why agentic commerce changes the game for merchants

In traditional ecommerce you optimize the shopper's path: your product page, your search ranking, your ads. In agentic commerce, an AI agent is the intermediary, and it decides which products to surface. If the agent doesn't know your product exists, understand its attributes, or trust your data, you're simply not in the consideration set — and unlike an abandoned cart, you get no signal that it happened.

That makes two things newly important. First, machine-readable product data: structured feeds, clear specifications, and accurate availability so an agent can evaluate you correctly. Second, visibility measurement: knowing whether AI assistants actually recommend your products for the questions your customers ask.

Emerging standards — often discussed under the banner of an "agentic commerce protocol" — aim to let agents query catalogs and transact more directly. The details are still settling in 2026, but the direction is clear: more buying decisions will be shaped, and some completed, by agents.

How this connects to ChatGPT and Shopify

For Shopify merchants, ChatGPT is the most visible early surface for agentic commerce: shoppers ask it for product recommendations every day. Whether your store appears in those answers is measurable, and it's the practical starting point for competing in an agent-mediated market — you can't optimize for agents you can't see.

Agentic commerce is closely tied to generative engine optimization and query fanout, which describe how AI systems find and assemble the products an agent presents. For the practical merchant angle, see the best AI visibility tools guide.
